Restrictive Practice Reduction — safe, ethical, evidence-based.

Reducing restrictive practices safely isn't an add-on at EVSS — it's a starting point. Every Comprehensive Positive Behaviour Support Plan we write has clear reduction targets, ethical strategies, and the reporting required under the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.

Restrictive Practice Reduction at EVSS
What it is

Restrictive Practice Reduction — explained.

A restrictive practice is any practice or intervention that has the effect of restricting the rights or freedom of movement of a person with a disability. Under the NDIS, regulated restrictive practices include seclusion, chemical, physical, mechanical and environmental restraint.

EVSS practitioners work within the NDIS Quality and Safeguards framework to safely reduce and ultimately eliminate restrictive practices wherever possible — through proactive supports, skill-building, environmental adjustments, and consistent training of the support team.

Reduction is never just about removing the restraint. It's about understanding the function behind the behaviour, teaching replacement skills, and equipping the people around the participant with safer, more positive ways to support them.

What's included

Every restrictive practice reduction at EVSS includes:

01 — Step

Baseline review

A clear baseline of every current restrictive practice — what, when, why, by whom.

02 — Step

Function-led reduction strategy

Reduction targets directly tied to the FBA findings and the participant's replacement skills.

03 — Step

Proactive environmental supports

Changes to the environment that reduce the conditions driving the behaviour of concern.

04 — Step

Skill-building plan

Replacement skills the participant is taught instead of the restrictive-practice-triggering behaviour.

05 — Step

Authorisation & reporting

Support with NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission reporting and state-based authorisation requirements.

06 — Step

Ongoing monitoring

Regular reviews with the team to track reduction progress against the plan.

Who it's for

Restrictive Practice Reduction is right for:

  • NDIS participants currently subject to one or more regulated restrictive practices
  • Families wanting fewer restrictive responses in their loved one's day
  • SIL providers needing to meet NDIS Commission reduction obligations
  • Schools using restrictive practices that need clinical oversight
  • Support Coordinators auditing a participant's plan for restrictive-practice compliance
How it works

From referral to outcome.

  1. Baseline mapping. Every current restrictive practice — documented, dated and understood.
  2. FBA-driven strategy. The function identified in the FBA shapes the reduction approach.
  3. Reduction targets in the PBSP. Clear, measurable targets baked into the Comprehensive Positive Behaviour Support Plan.
  4. Team training. The people delivering daily support are trained on the safer, replacement strategies.
  5. NDIS Commission reporting. Monthly use reporting handled to meet the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission requirements.
  6. Review & refine. Reduction is iterative — we review with the team and adjust strategies as progress is made.
Frequently asked

Restrictive Practice Reduction — your questions answered.

Under the NDIS, regulated restrictive practices include seclusion, chemical restraint, mechanical restraint, physical restraint and environmental restraint. Each must be authorised and reported under the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission framework.
EVSS practitioners support the clinical side — designing reduction strategies and writing them into the Comprehensive Positive Behaviour Support Plan. Authorisation pathways vary by state; we work alongside Support Coordinators and providers to meet the applicable requirements.
Safe reduction is always paced to the participant. Some practices can be reduced within months; others require longer, particularly where replacement skills need to be built first. The Comprehensive PBSP sets out measurable, realistic targets.
That's always the goal. EVSS uses a Positive Behaviour Support framework which prioritises eliminating restrictive practices wherever it can be done safely — through skill-building, proactive supports and team training.
