Functional Behaviour Assessment — understanding the why.

Every Positive Behaviour Support Plan starts with a question: what is this behaviour trying to communicate? A Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) is how EVSS practitioners answer it — with structured observation, interviews and data, in the real environments where the behaviour actually happens.

Functional Behaviour Assessment at EVSS
What it is

Functional Behaviour Assessment — explained.

A Functional Behaviour Assessment is a structured, evidence-based process that identifies the function a behaviour serves for a participant — whether that's escape, attention, sensory, access to a tangible item, or communication of an unmet need.

For NDIS participants experiencing behaviours of concern, an FBA is the foundation of every Comprehensive Positive Behaviour Support Plan. Without understanding the function, strategies will only ever treat the symptom — not the cause.

EVSS practitioners conduct FBAs in the participant's real environments — at home, in the classroom, in SIL accommodation, or wherever the behaviour shows up. That's the only way to capture accurate antecedents, behaviours and consequences (ABC data).

What's included

Every functional behaviour assessment at EVSS includes:

01 — Step

Interviews with the participant and their support network

Conversations with parents, carers, support workers, teachers, Support Coordinators and allied health to gather context.

02 — Step

Direct observation in real environments

Structured ABC data collection in the actual settings where behaviours of concern occur.

03 — Step

Record and history review

Reviewing existing reports, plans, incidents and clinical history to inform hypothesis testing.

04 — Step

Functional hypothesis development

Identifying the most likely function(s) of the behaviour, supported by data.

05 — Step

Indirect assessment tools

Validated tools such as Functional Assessment Interviews and behaviour rating scales.

06 — Step

Written FBA report and recommendations

A clear, plain-language report explaining the findings — ready to inform the Comprehensive PBS Plan.

Who it's for

Functional Behaviour Assessment is right for:

  • NDIS participants of any age experiencing behaviours of concern
  • Participants with current restrictive practices in place
  • Participants whose current Behaviour Support Plan isn't reducing behaviours of concern
  • Families and Support Coordinators wanting a fresh, evidence-based start
  • Schools or SIL providers asking 'why is this happening?'
How it works

From referral to outcome.

  1. Referral & intake. Submit a referral; we confirm fit and NDIS funding within one business day.
  2. Interim plan first. Where behaviours of concern are immediate, we put an Interim Behaviour Support Plan in place quickly while the FBA is underway.
  3. Multi-environment observation. Sessions across home, school and community to gather ABC data in the settings that matter.
  4. Stakeholder interviews. Family, support workers, teachers and allied health team.
  5. FBA report. Written findings, hypothesised functions, recommendations — handed back to the team in plain English.
  6. Comprehensive PBSP follows. The FBA findings drive a Comprehensive Positive Behaviour Support Plan that everyone can read and use.
Frequently asked

Functional Behaviour Assessment — your questions answered.

A Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) is a structured, evidence-based process used by NDIS Behaviour Support Practitioners to identify the underlying function — or purpose — a behaviour serves for a participant. It uses observation, interviews and data analysis to inform a Positive Behaviour Support Plan.
Most FBAs take several weeks, depending on the complexity of the participant's presentation and how many environments need to be observed. An Interim Behaviour Support Plan is usually in place early so the team has strategies while the Comprehensive plan is being developed.
Yes — under most NDIS plans, Functional Behaviour Assessments and Positive Behaviour Support Plans are funded under Capacity Building Supports (Improved Relationships). Your Support Coordinator can confirm available funding.
EVSS practitioners deliver FBAs in the real environments where behaviours of concern occur — homes, classrooms, SIL accommodation and community settings — across NSW and Australia-wide via telehealth where appropriate.
